Dear Younger Me,

Dear Younger Me,

Look how happy you look. You count down the days until the Redbird boys {your Baby Birds} return from the road for a long homestand. You feel tears come to your eyes when you look to the sky and see rain clouds, praying that the game won’t get cancelled. For you, the ballpark became a safe haven, your soft place to land when life got tough. The one place to shed your shy exterior and really become yourself. The one place to forget about your parents’ looming divorce for 9 innings.

I wish I could tell you that things WILL get better. Life will go on. Just like in baseball: you play, you win, you lose, or it rains. As much as you wish them away, the rainy days come, but.. there’s always another game.

You’re also obsessed with furthering your career. Obsessed with the idea of breaking the status quo in the sport world, refusing to be stereotyped or pigeon holed as a woman. You’re always picking up as many extra shifts at work as possible, thinking this is going to help further your career.. it won’t. But you will miss out on a lot...on weekends. Birthdays. Dating. Watching your brother grow up. Vacations with friends and family. Your mom’s life-threatening brain surgery, all because you think that one extra shift on the promo team or at Spring Training is going to get you somewhere. You cling on to the game for dear life, being the only consistent thing you have.

Homegirl, you need to learn that relationships are what matter most. Spend more time chatting with the team owner when he comes to town. Take advantage of babysitting the GM’s kids. Become great friends with your bosses, because these are the people who will project you into your next job. Don’t be afraid to miss a game to take your brother to the movies like you promised. Stop stressing over your next move. Little do you know but your first 2 internships out of college will be with 2 of the most recognizable teams in Major League Baseball. Trust the process. Trust that the Lord is directing your steps in the most perfect way. Trust that even missing a game or two, there will always be another. Your journey is just beginning, and FYI, it’s a grand slam!

Love,

Syd
